France Threatens iPhone 12 Recall Over Radiation Emission Dispute

France’s National Frequency Agency (ANFR) has claimed that recent testing shows that the iPhone 12 emits electromagnetic radiation beyond the regulated limit. The agency has ordered Apple to stop selling the device in the country until the issue is resolved, and has even threatened to send its agents to Apple stores and distributors to ensure compliance.

Apple, on the other hand, insists that the iPhone 12 is compliant with global radiation standards and has been certified international bodies. However, if Apple fails to resolve the dispute within two weeks, France’s junior minister for the digital economy has threatened to order a recall of all iPhone 12 devices in circulation.

The ANFR tested around 140 mobile phone models, including the iPhone 12, to check their Specific Absorption Rate (SAR), which measures the amount of radiofrequency energy absorbed the body. The agency found that the iPhone 12 exceeded the limits set EU regulations. It’s worth noting that the ANFR’s assessment differs from other national regulators because it includes direct skin contact without layers of clothing between the device and the user.

The issue of whether exposure to low-level electromagnetic fields poses a risk to human health has long been debated. Various scientific studies have provided conflicting conclusions. However, it is vital for Apple and French authorities to work together to resolve the dispute and ensure the safety of consumers.
