Minnesota Seeks Public Input on Digital Opportunity Program

The Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is inviting the public to provide input on the state’s Digital Opportunity Program draft plan. The plan aims to address gaps in broadband access, digital technology ownership, and digital skills within the state.

The Digital Opportunity plan, developed DEED’s Office of Broadband Development (OBD), outlines Minnesota’s strategy for utilizing a forthcoming grant from the federal government. This grant is part of the $2.75 billion Digital Equity Act, which is included in the $65 billion federal broadband funding allocated the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law passed in 2021.

Under the Digital Equity Act, each state is required to submit a plan to the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) detailing how it intends to allocate its funding. The purpose of the plan is to promote digital equity and ensure that all residents have equal access to broadband internet, possess the necessary digital tools, and possess the skills needed to thrive in a digital society.

The public’s input is critical to the development of a comprehensive and effective Digital Opportunity Program. DEED encourages residents to participate sharing their ideas, concerns, and suggestions for improving broadband access and digital inclusion across the state. The feedback obtained through this process will inform the final version of the plan, which will guide Minnesota’s efforts to bridge the digital divide.

By actively involving the public in the planning process, Minnesota aims to create an inclusive and equitable digital landscape that benefits all communities, regardless of their geographical location or socioeconomic status.
