WipeOut Source Code Leaked: Programmer Makes Game Playable for Free in Web Browser

One programmer has taken it upon himself to make the original WipeOut game playable for free in any web browser excavating the leaked source code. WipeOut was Sony’s initial first-party exclusive for the original PlayStation when it was released in 1995. The anti-gravity racing game was a phenomenal success and had an incredible soundtrack and neo-Tokyo aesthetic.

Despite the release of the PlayStation Classic, 2017’s WipeOut Omega Collection, and PS Plus adding old PS1 games to PS5 like Twisted Metal, there is no way to play the original WipeOut on modern consoles. This has led fans to find alternative ways to experience the game. Programmer Dominic Szablewski documented his process of salvaging the PlayStation version of WipeOut from the leaked source code in a recent blog post.

Szablewski describes the messy state of the source code, with various modified ports piled on top of each other. However, after a lot of detective work and effort, he managed to resurrect a modified playable version of the game with an uncapped framerate that looks crisp and sounds great. He does recommend two other existing PC ports, WipeOut Phantom Edition and a project a user named XProger, but acknowledges that his modified version has the original source code.

There has been speculation about whether WipeOut can be considered abandonware, as the leaked source code seemingly has not prompted any action from Sony to remaster or port the game. Szablewski suggests that Sony may lack interest in the original WipeOut, but encourages them to either let it be or create a real remaster. He even offers his assistance in the process.
