The Community College of Baltimore County Launches Digital Navigator Program to Promote Digital Literacy

The Community College of Baltimore County (CCBC) has recently introduced a digital navigator program aimed at teaching local residents valuable digital literacy skills. With the rapid advancement of technology, it has become increasingly important for individuals to be equipped with the necessary knowledge to navigate the digital world effectively.

Loretta Ambe is one of twelve navigators who have been selected to assist seniors in managing their healthcare, learning how to check email, and staying connected with family and friends. Through this program, the goal is to ensure that no individual is left behind in an increasingly connected world. It aims to provide people of all generations with access to information, opportunities, and services.

Comcast has generously provided a $150,000 grant to support the work of the navigators. This grant will initially cover a one-year period, but there is potential for renewal in the future. Veronica Santos, the external affairs director at Comcast, emphasized that the program not only promotes accessibility but also affordability. Through the Affordable Connectivity Program, qualifying residents can receive up to a $30 monthly benefit towards their internet bill, in addition to a $15 credit provided the state of Maryland. This means that eligible residents can receive up to a $45 credit each month.

Furthermore, the Baltimore County government is joining forces with CCBC to bridge the digital divide. The county is distributing 3,000 Chromebooks to CCBC students to ensure that they have the necessary tools for their education. This initiative will greatly benefit students like Mayson Tress, who expressed how it will make school easier and provide access to job applications.

Baltimore County Executive, Johnny Olzewski, attended the launch of the digital navigator program and emphasized the importance of internet access in today’s world. He stated that during the pandemic, it has become evident that the internet is not a luxury but a necessity. These initiatives will enable residents to stay connected to their families, advance their careers, and pursue their dreams.
