The Government of India to Expand Digital India Programme with Rs 14,903 Crore Outlay

The Union Minister for IT and Electronics, Ashwini Vaishnaw, recently announced the government’s plans to expand the Digital India programme. The Union Cabinet has approved an outlay of Rs 14,903 crore for a period of five years, starting from 2021-22 to 2025-26.

During a cabinet meeting, Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved the Digital India programme, showing the government’s commitment to furthering digital transformation in the country. The approved budget demonstrates the government’s dedication to strengthening the digital infrastructure and promoting digital literacy across the nation.

Under this expansion, significant investments will be made in upskilling IT professionals and training individuals in cybersecurity. Around 525,000 IT professionals will undergo upskilling programs, equipping them with the necessary skills needed in today’s ever-evolving digital landscape. Simultaneously, 265,000 individuals will receive training in cybersecurity, addressing the growing need for safeguarding digital assets and combating cyber threats.

To enhance citizen services, the mobile-based Umang application will be enriched with 540 additional services. This will expand its scope beyond the existing 1,700 services, making it more convenient for citizens to access government services digitally.

Furthermore, the National Supercomputing Mission will receive a boost with the addition of nine more supercomputers. This initiative, which currently comprises 18 supercomputers, aims to strengthen scientific research, weather forecasting, and complex data processing capabilities in various domains.

The expansion of the Digital India programme underscores the government’s emphasis on embracing digital technologies to empower citizens and promote inclusive growth. With these efforts, India is poised to continue its journey towards becoming a digitally empowered nation.
