Plaid Hat Games just announced a new expansion for their popular zombie survival board game Dead of Winter called Warring Colonies. As you can extrapolate from the title, the expansion has players team up into two different colonies. Those teams then fight over resources and power.
Dead of Winter: Warring Colonies expands the game to support 4-11 players. Each colony will have their own main objectives to complete. The two different teams are fighting over the same locations, making the resources contained at those locations that much more sparse.
Not only that, but the expansion also brings in a new fighting system complete with tactic cards, bullet tokens, and 12-sided combat dice. Although the colonies are fighting against each other, there will be joint-colony crisis cards which will force the two teams to work together each round.
There’s also an optional Lone Wolf module. This adds a player to the game that is separate from both colonies. The Lone Wolf is pursuing her own secret goals and will often work to keep both colonies in check.
The Warring Colonies expansion comes with 15 new survivor cards, 50 new crossroad cards, 43 new item cards, and 11 new crisis cards. You can also combine this expansion with the Long Night standalone expansion.
Plaid Hat acknowledges that an 11 player game sounds like it would take forever to play. To mitigate this, they have added simultaneous turn mechanics and a sand timer to keep the game moving.
Dead of Winter: Warring Colonies requires a Dead of Winter base set to play, and it requires both the base game and Dead of Winter: The Long Night to play the warring colonies variant and the lone wolf module.
Plaid Hat says that they will release more information about exactly how the game works soon. Right now there is no expected release date or an expected price for the Dead of Winter: Warring Colonies expansion.
